Feature: Creating Your Own Media Center
TiVo brought TV recording into the living room, but now it is possible to record TV straight to your computer with the right software. Windows Media Center will setup to record your favorite shows and mix them along with your other videos, photos, and music.
Don’t want to pay for Windows Media Center? Try these:
- Tversity – software package that allows a personal computer to stream content to UPnP devices, such as the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii, regardless of the limitations of the device.
- Play-On – Allows you to stream Hulu and Netflix along with your own media.
- MythTV – Linux-based. This is a great solution to make your PC into a media center, but will wipe out your previous operating system. This can be made easier thanks to Knopmyth
- Media Portal – MediaPortal allows a computer to perform many entertainment-related tasks, such as recording, pausing, and rewinding live television, much like a PVR box such as TiVo. Other functionality includes watching video, listening to music with dynamic playlist building based on the social music network Last.fm, launching and playing games, recording live radio and browsing picture collections. MediaPortal supports a plugin system and a skin engine allowing users to extend the base software.
- Yahoo GO! for TV - Yahoo’s free TV service, its only limitation is the hardware that is supported.
Totally Free Download: Ghostbusters
Now that you have your own Media Center to bring infotainment to the living room, why not check out YouTube on the boob tube. YouTube is offering Ghostbusters for free to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary.
