Computer 911-6.27.09:”Scams”

Today’s program is all about online scammers and how to avoid them, creating a safer and better web experience. But first, JP has the news:

In the News

  • How many people does it take to clog the internets?  Just one. That is if that one person is Michael Jackson.  (CNN.com)
  • Judge orders a single mother of 4 to pay BIG to the RIAA…again!  (The Times Online)
  • Iran can’t stop Twitter. Should OUR Second Amendment be amended to include the “Right to bear technology? (Talking Points Memo).
  • Microsoft announces Windows 7 Pricing! JP is geeked…Scott is indifferent. (Gizmodo)

SCAMS

There are many people out there that will try and make a buck on unsuspecting individuals any way they can, and unfortunately the internet can make their job much easier.  Scott will be back with some examples of these scams, and tips for avoiding them on Thursday.

Its Backup Saturday!

Its the last Saturday of the month, and JP wants to remind all our listeners that you should backup all your important files off of your Pc!

To do this you have several options:

  • An external USB Hard Drive.  Generally around 500GB is more than enough for important documents, music, and casual photographers.  Consider a 1TB drive is you are an avid photographer or videographer.  External drives available at Pc Medic. Not sure what size is best, let us help you decide.
  • Windows Backup. For XP, checkout the Microsoft How-To arictle: “Windows XP Backup Made Easy,” For Vista its Windows Backup and Restore.
  • On the Mac, Time Machine.
  • Also you should consider keeping your files off-site like at the office, or a relatives.  If there is a disaster or break-in at your home, and on-site backup won’t do you much good.

Totally Free Download: Any Video Converter

  • An excellent Freeware program for converting any video file to another format.
  • Provides a great intuitive interface, and built-in encoding presets for most of the most popular formats.
  • And it even has a feature that will allow you to download your favorite YouTube videos.

That’s it for this week.  We’ll be off for the 4th, and wish you and yours a very fun and SAFE Independence Day!   We’ll be back on July 11.

Audio of this program will be posted at the top of the page when available.
